Sustainable Infrastructure Standards for Urban Ecology

State: Illinois

Applicant: Chicago Department of Transportation

Grant Amount: $73,281

Period of Performance: 12 months

Summary: This grant will allow the Chicago Department of Transportation to develop a demonstration project on two miles of city streets to join green principles with standard urban streetscapes. The project will utilize green techniques commonly associated with LEED-certified buildings, but not typical in streetscapes. The project aims to: improve stormwater management; conserve water and energy; improve bus stops and bike lanes; recycle construction materials, reduce ambient temperatures, and educate the public. In addition, to incorporating green engineering and design throughout the streetscape the project will conduct outreach through workshops, presentations and the creation of a sustainable infrastructure design manual, an education handbook and a project walking tour.

Project Status: The Chicago Department of Transportation signed the contract with FHWA and an official kick off call was held. Thus far, the Chicago Department of Transportation has completed a Sustainable Infrastructure Design Manual, as well as the kiosk graphics and document for the educational self-guided walking tour.
