    Module 1: Introduction

SPECIES INVOLVED IN WVCs

Deer are overwhelmingly the most common large animal involved in WVCs.

This image shows 2 pie charts. One pie chart shows the following percentage of accidents involving several animal species categories in California: 54.4 percent for Deer.; 14.9 percent for Livestock.; 20.4 percent for Other (wild or domestic).; 10.3 percent for Non-Animal. The second pie chart shows the following percentages of accidents involving different animal species categories in Maine: 81.2 percent for Deer.; 15.1 percent for Moose.; 0.6 percent for Bear.; 3.1 percent for Other Species.

"Non-animal" represents WVC collisions in which an animal was involved but not struck (i.e., the driver swerves to avoid a deer and collides with a guardrail).
