Description: The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) wetland banking initiative began in the early 1990s to identify candidate locations to provide mitigation for DelDOT projects having small wetlands impacts. In the late 1990s, studies found heavy metal contamination located along the Christiana River, near the Glenville Wetland Mitigation banking site in the northern county (New Castle). After State and Federal agencies addressed the nearby contamination concerns, 12.8 acres of the State purchased site was approved by EPA as DelDOT's first wetland bank since successfully used and reaching capacity. Between 2007 and 2014 DelDOT used the site to mitigate for four projects totaling nearly 9 acres of mitigation. Remaining bank capacity will be used for four new projects scheduled for construction in 2015. DelDOT is in the process of locating and establishing three wetland banks in the State, one in each of the State’s three counties. Two of the three sites have been identified, and studies to finalize these sites as wetland banks are now underway. The bank site in the southern county (Sussex) is proposed to be located near the Great Cypress Swamp. Studies are being done to prevent any increased flooding in the Swamp and adjacent properties as a result of the creation of the wetland bank. Prospective sites in the central county (Kent) are also being evaluated and studied.
