How the Eco-Logical Approach Aligns with Other Environmental Approaches
and the Transportation Project Development Process

There are several approaches to consider when evaluating options to accelerate project delivery. Targeted transportation planning activities can create schedule and cost savings in subsequent phases of the project development process—environmental, design, or construction phases—and result in beneficial outcomes for the natural environment. Eco-Logical, Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL), and PlanWorks are three such approaches.

Eco-Logical

Landscape scale approach that draws on partnerships with local or regulatory agencies approach to assess resources, prioritize conservation objectives, and establish programmatic agreements. This information can be used to support programmatic mitigation planning, PEL, and the NEPA process.

Eco-Logical

Strengthen your natural resource stewardship by adopting the Eco-Logical approach.
Define a path and set realistic goals for implementing the Eco-Logical process as detailed in the AASHTO Practitioner’s Handbook.

Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL)

Considers environmental, community, and economic goals identified early in the transportation planning process, and uses the information, analysis, and products developed during planning to inform the environmental review process. This could include Eco-Logical products (e.g. partnerships, agreements, and programmatic mitigation plans).
